National Mac & Cheese Day: Béchamel or Custard Style?
If you were to leave it up to me, every day would be National Macaroni and Cheese Day! The creamy combination of cheese and pasta is in my opinion, the ultimate comfort food. Or perhaps it's partly because I have an unhealthy obsession with cheese...
Regardless, today we celebrate this classic all-American dish, whether it be from the blue box, a homemade family recipe or a restaurant favorite. Cheese lovers unite today and we have a few deals to share with you!
But first, let's explore a popular question and let's be honest, for 99% of macaroni and cheese lovers, there's no in between. It's either one or the other. When it comes to macaroni and cheese, which is better: Béchamel style or Custard style?
Ok, you probably already know my answer. I'm that 1%...I'll gladly devour them both. If you're not familiar with the difference in recipes, read on my friends...
Béchamel style macaroni and cheese starts with making a sauce by heating (and whisking) milk, butter and flour. This is a Béchamel sauce. After making the sauce, shredded cheese is typically stirred into the sauce until melted and smooth. Pasta is then added to the sauce until heated through. Typically this dish is served immediately, however some folks prefer to add panko crumbs, perhaps a little more shredded cheese and then bake for 30 minutes. Try this Béchamel style recipe!
Custard style macaroni and cheese, often referred to as the classic Southern macaroni and cheese, uses the custard method. No sauce is made ahead of time. The main ingredient that helps the custard form in this recipe, is egg. This is more of a "one pot" type of recipe, perfect for if you're in a hurry. All ingredients are typically mixed together, placed in a baking dish, topped with more cheese and baked. Try this Custard style recipe!
