Daily Stretching - You Have Options!

The dread for taking time to implement a stretching regimen is right up there with maintaining an exercise routine. It's something we know we should do at least a few times a week, if not daily, but many of us avoid it like the plague. Common excuses may be:

  • Not enough space

  • Not enough time

  • Physical limitations

  • No knowledge of proper techniques

My biggest excuse for avoiding both stretching and exercise is not enough time in the day. But let's address all of the above excuses and see if any of them are valid for my situation.


My home office is approximately 10' x 12'. In my office, I have a large L-shaped desk, filing cabinet, large IKEA cube book shelf AND all of our green screen video equipment. I'd take a photo and share it but let's be honest, I'm still working on #16: Tidy Your Work Space from our 20 Things To Start Daily post. 🤣 With that being said, I literally have a 6' x 3' walkway clear of clutter. "But Kelly, why would you stretch in your office?" Well, I sprained my ankle a week ago, so walking up the flight of stairs to our upstairs gym is out of the question. The rest of our home is hardwood floors and I need that cushy carpet! So my office it is.

I found an easy 10-Minute Daily Stretching Sequence with photos over at blog.Fitbit.com that I thought would be a nice way to start this daily routine. Guess what, 10 minutes later, I successfully completed 8 stretches in the comfort of my small and cluttered home office. Where's my Staples "That was EASY" button...?


Again, this was my biggest excuse for stretching and still is for exercising (working on that). I decided that this morning I would add the 10-Minute Daily Stretching Sequence into my morning routine and see if I could still get ready for the day within my normal 90-minutes.

  • 7am - Wake up, drink water, make coffee, let dogs out.

  • 7:15am - 10-Minute stretching.

  • 7:30am - Swap out laundry, sweep floors.

  • 7:45am - Check email, make social media post.

  • 8am - Shower, get dressed, make-up and hair.

  • 8:30am - Make breakfast and get back to home office.

So there you have it, I did it. I believe that by mentally keeping myself on schedule, I was able to add in that 10 minutes because it stopped me from doing things like check Instagram or Facebook, which we all know can suck the time from your day. My goal now is to get up at least an hour earlier, so I can add in daily exercise.


As I mentioned above, I recently sprained my ankle. So realistically, I could say that stretching was out for me because I physically couldn't do it. Not so fast little devil on my shoulder! Before making this post, I made sure that I searched for a stretching routine that was primarily floor-based, so there wouldn't be much pressure on my ankle. The 10-Minute Daily Stretching Sequence by blog.fitbit.com was a pretty perfect fit for me. The first and last stretches are standing, however, I was able to adjust my position and put less pressure on my feet while still experiencing a good stretch in the target muscle area.
